We’re all looking for the ultimate substrate... a substrate that gives your plants the boost they need, retains water perfectly, forms an excellent air buffer, and is sufficiently stable.

In a perfect world, it would also consist of eco-friendly, renewable, biobased materials. It would be 100% clean; perfect for export; food-safe; and leaves no waste. But as we all know, nothing’s perfect… or is it?

A fully biodegradable substrate plug!

The Nygaia cultivation plug is designed to provide optimal support to the roots of a plant. It’s a function Nygaia fulfils with verve. However, when Nygaia reaches the end of its useful life, we obviously don't want to be left with a mountain of waste. Nygaia is made of 100% biodegradable polymers, so the plug can be composted at the end of its lifespan and Mother Earth benefits again. A large proportion of these biopolymers are also biobased. meaning they come from a natural source. They are extracted from maize, cassava, or sugar cane waste, which completes the circle.

How you benefit

The advantage of an artificial substrate? The manufacturing process is controlled down to the last detail, so you can always count on a clean, safe, and stable product. We guarantee that out product is free of pathogens and harmful substances. It is completely inert. Each plug has exactly the same fibre structure in terms of fibre thicknesses and direction. That translates to a extremely stable quality, which will ensure an even germination in your crop along with very uniform, strong, and healthy plants.

The ultimate goal: local production

How amazing would it be if you could produce this fibre yourself? We would ship the semi-finished product, and provide you with the automation to produce Nygaia on location. That would give you complete control over its form and the density of the fibres. Maximum control, in other words. It would also mean an end to over-production and excessive transport movements. Nygaia's 4 core principles

Sustainable

We want to produce a substrate that’s as sustainable as possible, yet perfectly suited to the requirements associated with intensive, high-tech horticulture. Nygaia is biodegradable (compostable) and biobased, which means zero waste. We plan to produce Nygaia as locally as possible.

Steerable

Check the variables: Nygaia is completely clean and inert, so you decide what goes into your system and what stays out of it; no issues with residues or loose particles. This makes Nygaia ideal for sustainable, high-tech crops such as hydroponics, vertical farming and closed environment agriculture (CEA). However, Nygaia also performs remarkably well in more traditional cultivation systems.

Scalable

Our ambition? To supply a semi-finished product and machinery that allows Nygaia to be produced locally on-site, and enables us both to scale up easily.

Safe

Nygaia’s structure is stable, so no loose particles end up in the system and your crop remains free of microplastics, toxic residues and pathogens. The best growing conditions can only have one result; a strong and healthy crop.

Various shapes and sizes

Nygaia is already available for testing in a number of shapes, lengths and diameters. We supply the following three basic plug sizes as standard: 1.7 cm Ø x 2.5 cm ↕, 2.4 cm Ø x 3 cm ↕ and 4 cm Ø x 4 cm ↕. Depending on your system requirements, we may be able to make other sizes. Order them in the tray, or on a roll to produce your own plugs, completely tailored to your requirements!
