The science behind Nygaia
Peat is an unsurpassed substrate. The unique pore structure of peat ensures perfect moisture regulation and a natural microclimate, which not only provides the right growing conditions, but also makes the plant resilient. Although we cannot copy the pore structure of peat, we have taken inspiration from it. And combined the fundamental properties of peat with the advantages of an artificial, biodegradable substrate. Namely:
- Inert; because actually we want to be able to regulate nutrition ourselves
- Sterile;
- Structurally stable; so no loose particles in your system
- Reproducible and scalable;
- Stable quality;
- Manufactured from mostly renewable materials;
- Fully degradable; so no waste
Structured chaos
Nygaia's ingenuity lies in its fibre structure. Or rather no structure at all... The tangle of fibres allows Nygaia to retain water and air like no other. Thus, a fully watered plug consists of 5% fibre, 60% water and the rest air, which allows oxygen diffusion to the root. The fibre orientation also ensures strong capillary action. This way water and nutrients are easily transported to the plant root and released when the plant demands it.
The loose fibre structure gives plant roots plenty of room to grow. At the same time, Nygaia provides the stability the plant needs to germinate and grow.
What is it made of?
Nygaia is made of biodegradable, and largely bio-based polymers. Did you know that these polymers are made from residual streams of sugarcane, corn and cassava? And thus renewable. Yet more natural than you thought! The big advantage of an artificial substrate is that the quality is controllable and the concept scalable. And that is a big advantage given the ever-growing demand for your green products.
Biodegradation
Nygaia is compostable. It degrades under the right conditions and leaves no traces. No waste, no microplastics. Very environmentally friendly.
Because Nygaia is largely manufactured from bio-based raw materials, the product naturally has a low ecological footprint. Combined with the decomposition principle, this also helps reduce your carbon and ecological footprint. But most importantly, it allows you to grow a healthy and resilient crop. As sustainable as possible. That's what we do it for.
